Strategy Development

The need

The leaders I work with are smart. They see that the world is changing fast and that the organisation needs to be strategically astute to adapt and thrive in the ever-evolving ‘next normal’.

They also see that a well-run and inclusive strategy development process provides a wonderful opportunity to bring even greater cohesion, clarity and confidence across the organisation.

The challenge

In my view, the three biggest challenges to good strategy development are:

Time and capacity: Everywhere I work, the senior leadership team’s time and talent are already extremely well utilised and day-to-day responsibilities demand significant attention.

Fast-changing context: Traditional strategic plans quickly become outdated, rendering them ineffective in guiding decision-making. The strategy needs an adaptive framework that focuses on 'how' at least as much as 'what'.

Our psychology: Even our brains can challenge strategic analysis as our cognitive functioning tends to favour tactical and operational thinking and familiar patterns. We desire control and predictability, so it can help to be guided to engage directly with complexity and uncertainty.

How I help

I provide advice, facilitation and mentoring to leaders through their strategy development or business planning process. That may be by facilitating one strategy review workshop with the Board and/or team, or an end-to-end strategy development process; it entirely depends on the starting point and goals of the project.

The output is a valuable and relevant resource, an adaptive strategy framework designed to be referred to frequently to align and guide organisational decision-making.
